Comparison of gastric motility in the intact ex vivo stomach and a flat sheet. This movie compares the typical gastric perstaltic contractions in an intact, ex vivo murine stomach (top left panel) with a flat sheet preparation of the corpus and antrum (top right panel). The flat sheet was made by cutting along the lesser curvature and pinning the corpus (TOP) and antrum (bottom and extending to the pyloric sphincter and duodenum; thicker area at bottom of flat sheet). Edges if preparations a highlighted to show movements of peristaltic contractions. As movie runs, spatio-temporal maps are generated at the bottom (top trace is intact stomach and bottom trace is flat sheet, opened stomach). Slopes of the S-T maps indicate rates of propagation. Note that gastric peristalsis in the ex vivo stomach and flat sheets occur at approximately the same frequency and propagate at similar rates through the corpus and antrum. Scale showing mm below intact stomach and to the left of the flat sheet. Movie is displayed at 2X speed (running counter gives actual time reference).
